A quanto pare sembra sia una delle nuove frontiere che sta esplorando chi si occupa di video mapping. Mi riferisco alle proiezioni su elementi naturali come alberi piante e fiori. A riprova basta ricordare il mapping video interattivo di Kimichi and Chips o anche il video clip realizzato da Dirk Rauscher. The spectacle and surplus masculinity of Hollywood is hardly run-of-the-mill source material for generative art, but Canadian software artist Jeremy Rotsztain has been diligently exploring transforming cinematic convention into rich, abstract compositions for three years now. Rotsztain’s Action Painting project (first featured on CAN in fall 2009) employs scenes and sound design—’data’ from action movies—as raw material to generate abstract expressionist style animations. ‘Revving Motors, Spinning Wheels’ (below) is one of four videos released by Rotsztain this summer that illustrate just how far this project has come – the piece reads as a love letter to both Jackson Pollock and Jason Bourne. On close viewing the source material (culled from Ronin, The French Connection, etc.)  is clearly organized thematically and the video functions as a serial examination of the stock components of definitive chase scenes. Screeching brakes, blaring sirens, lead-footed acceleration and the inevitable Ballardian-endgame all filter through the mix in clusters of topical clips.

Seaquence is an experimental musical petri-dish created by Ryan Alexander, Gabriel Dunne and Daniel Massey. Adopting a biological metaphor, Seaquence allows you to create and combine musical lifeforms into dynamic compositions.

The way each lifeform looks and sounds is determined by the step-sequencer pattern you create, and other parameters you can tweak including their audio waveform, octave, melody, envelope, volume, and more. Compositions can be saved by creating a simple link, which can then be shared with others.

New project by Georg Reil (previously: Fine Collection of Curious Sound Objects) comes in the form of an object that by physical touch and deformation alters animated graphics presented on a built in LED screen. Titled ‘Tangible – Experimental User Interface’ Georg explores experimental interface reacting to movement, rotation, tilt and pressure. Various applications created using Processing and Arduino are controlled via direct physical manipulation of the display – see video. Of course, as it can be expected from Georg, beautifully presented.

Created by Francisco Lopez (Madrid, Amsterdam) in collaboration with generative artist Paul Prudence (London), Hydro Acoustic Study or also known as Untitled [BioAcousticPhenomena] is a video performance/audio visual installation exploring live mutating morphologies where the organic and the virtual collide in crisp detail.

This performance was realised in association with AMBIFONICA, the residency programme organized by OPTOFONICA Lab, hosting local and international artists who work on new compositions that employ advanced techniques of Ambisonics sound spatialization.

Reel to reel tape machines: “ Reel to reel tape machines are dinosaurs compared to the digital audio workstations we use today and old timers are usually grateful not to have to resort to scissors when an edit is required in the modern sound studio. For people like Wada Ei who were born after the personal computer however old tape machines still carry a mysterious fascination. His Open Reel Ensemble has retrò-engineered a set of two track Pioneer RT-1050s and given them special features. The tape decks are interfaced with computers and can be individually controlled through an iphone application. But what is perhaps more interesting is that the play heads have been made mobile by mounting them on solenoids. Activating the solenoids moves the play heads back and forth at variable speeds, introducing novel jitter effects. The Open Reel Ensemble performs live combining their modded gear with conventional instruments. These are sampled in real time and then warped, warbled, looped and scratched by the nimble fingers of Wada Ei. It might seem like a lot of work for something that could be achieved far more easily by other means, but old school analog devices beat computers when it comes to stage presence and sheer physical response.

Map Your Moves [moritz.stefaner.eu] represents more than 4,000 geographical immigration and emigration patterns from over 1,700 people in a beautiful, interactive interface. The data was collected during an informal survey by WNYC, a New York based public radio station.

Each circle corresponds to a unique zip code area in New York. Its size indicates the number of moves to, or from, the area. Each circle actually consists of 2 overlaid circles: a red one for people moving out of a specific area, and a blue one for people moving into the area. Individual circles can be selected to inspect just the moves to or from this area. Clusters can be chosen by dragging a radial selection bubble around any group of circles.

Understanding Shakespeare [understanding-shakespeare.com] visualizes entire plays by Shakespeare in 5 different ways, by showing its entire texts translated as a collection of the most frequently used words for each character.

In the first data view, a scene is represented by a block of text and scaled relatively according to its number of words. Characters are ordered by appearance from left to right throughout the play. In addition, the major character’s speeches are highlighted to illustrate their amounts of spoken words as compared to the rest of the play. In the ‘You, Me and Them’ view, the role of each character is highlighted by grouping all statements starting with a personal pronoun (e.g. I, you, me, them, …). In the ‘Shakespeare Googled’ view, famous quotes from a play are compared with the number of results the text returns on Google. In the ‘Enter Exit’ view focuses solely on the action on stage by representing the stage directions found within the written drama, such as when individual characters enter or exit the stage, sing, sleep or die.
